Real life and fairy tales collide in Never After: The Thirteenth Fairy, book one in the new middle-grade Never After series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Descendants series, Melissa de la Cruz.

Nothing ever happens in Filomena Jefferson-Cho’s sleepy little suburban town of North Pasadena. The sun shines every day, the grass is always a perfect green, and while her progressive school swears there’s no such thing as bullying, she still feels bummed out. But one day, when Filomena is walking home on her own, something strange happens.

Filomena is being followed by Jack Stalker, one of the heroes in the Thirteenth Fairy, a series of books she loves about a brave girl and her ragtag group of friends who save their world from an evil enchantress. She must be dreaming, or still reading a book. But Jack is insistent–he’s real, the stories are real, and Filomena must come with him at once!

Soon, Filomena is thrust into the world of evil fairies and beautiful princesses, sorcerers and slayers, where an evil queen drives her ruthless armies to destroy what is left of the Fairy tribes. To save herself and the kingdom of Westphalia, Filomena must find the truth behind the fairytales and set the world back to rights before the cycle of sleep and destruction begins once more.

Can you tell us a bit about you and Never After: The Thirteenth Fairy?

I’m the author of 63 books for readers of all ages. I’m best known for Disney’s Descendants, my vampire series Blue Bloods, the Alex & Eliza trilogy and Witches of East End which became a TV show on Lifetime. Never After is my latest middle grade series about a voracious reader who discovers her favorite series of fairy tale books is actually real and she goes into an adventure there.

What was different about writing this book in comparison to your previous releases?

Before Never After, I was working in the Disney universe, and there are a lot of rules and boundaries in that storytelling, because I respected the Disney storytellers who came before me and I wanted to pay homage and tribute to their work. So it was fun to just do whatever I wanted in the fairytale space with Never After. It was liberating and exciting to be able to tell my own version. I loved writing the Descendants too – but it’s a diferent viewpoint.

Were there any characters you based on people in your life?

The mom and dad are loosely based on me, my husband, my brother, a good friend who is British. Filomena is a lot like me as a kid, but some of her experiences were my daughter’s expereinces.

If you had to choose one character from The Thirteenth Fairy to go on a road trip with, who would it be and why?

Jack Stalker, for sure, he’s so capable, we’d never get lost and he could protect me from everything with those vines that shoot from his hands.

Can you give us a look into what your writing process is like?

I like to think for a long time before I put anything down. I had been thinking of Never After for a few years, then I finally write the synopsis and from there, I write a full chapter by chapter outline. Then I do the first draft of the manuscript. Then I rewrite it 1000X times until it’s correct.

Are you working on anything currently, and if so, can you give us any hints/details?

Working on the second Never After book. Filomena meets Cinderalla, and things are NOT pretty lol.

Finally, what do you hope readers learn/take away from reading your book?

I hope they are entertained, amused and moved. I hope they had a good time!
